Do Cats Have Feelings and Emotions?

Mar 30, 2021

A lot of people think, especially those who don't own a cat, that cats are just manipulative creatures and that they don't have any feelings and emotions as we humans do.

Someone who says that obviously never lived with a cat and it is sad to see that people genuinely think that cats are all cold and hostile.

Well, this is simply not the case and we are going to explain why in this article.

Do cats feel love?

Do cats really feel love or is it that we who exercise wishful thinking, projecting our own emotions onto our cats? Well, the answer is: yes, cats do feel love, just like dogs do, but in their own way. Cats see us as their partners, they feel protected when their owner is around, they love the smell of our clothes, they purr to show that they're happy or to comfort you when you're down.

We remember the day we rescued our kitty Puma, her tail was all up and she wouldn't stop purring and giving headbutts, she felt loved and safe with us and showed us that she is grateful for that.

Do cats form an attachment?

Cats do form a strong attachment to their owners. Cats can be as loyal as dogs and in many cases when the owner is away for long enough or has died, cats show signs of distress and can refuse to eat. There have been cases in which perfectly healthy cats have died after the loss of their owner.

Which emotions do cats have?

Cats express a range of emotions that are usually signaled loud and clear and some studies show that cats can also pick up on the emotions of their owners. Cats essentially have the same emotions as we humans. They purr when they're happy or in comfort, they growl and hiss when they're annoyed or feel threatened, they feel anxious especially when they're in a new environment and they also slow blink to show us love.

How to befriend a cat?

Cats respond to all “Positive” emotions delivered gently and slowly. They also respond negatively to loud, boisterous emotions by running and hiding. If you want to befriend a cat, it takes patience… lots of it!

Becoming a friend to a cat takes time and love. However, as many cat lovers will agree, your efforts will be worth it.

First is making the first contact, as said previously, cats react positively to slow and gentle movements, so you should extend your arm slowly and put your hand out to them near the side of their face. If the cat does not seem alarmed, you can pet the cat. Cats love having the sides of their face and their heads massaged, but if the cat doesn't let you come close then you should leave them alone. Try coming back to give them food and not to escalate things quickly. You need time and patience.

So you just read this article and found out if cats have feelings and emotions. Now you want to show them more love by getting something that they need and will appreciate.
